Position Overview

AFI is seeking an Internal Audit Examiner (Real Estate / Multifamily) to join our team on a contract basis. This individual will be responsible for conducting internal audits across AFI’s multifamily portfolio, ensuring compliance with internal controls, identifying process gaps, and recommending improvements to align with industry best practices.

This is a contract, non-W2 role. Working hours will be 10-20 hours per week to start.

JOB DUTIES

  • Perform internal audits of property-level and corporate financial processes
  • Review and assess internal controls for compliance and operational efficiency
  • Identify risks and recommend corrective actions to mitigate potential issues
  • Develop standardized audit reports and present findings to leadership
  • Collaborate with accounting and operations teams to implement process improvements
  • Assist in preparing AFI for external audits and regulatory compliance
  • Other audit-related duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

Required Education & Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • CIA or CPA (CIA required for audit leadership if not a CPA)
  • Master’s degree / MBA preferred

Preferred Certifications

  • CISA (IT audit)
  • CFE (fraud examination)
  • CRMA (risk management assurance)
  • CAMS (financial crime compliance)
  • CGMA (optional)

Additional Requirements

  • 3–5 years’ experience in internal audit, compliance, or risk management (real estate/multifamily experience strongly preferred)
  • Must be exceptionally organized and able to handle multiple projects at once with concurrent deadlines
  • Positive attitude with strong teamwork skills
  • Excellent written/verbal communication
  • Must provide list of 2–3 professional references

COMPENSATION & HOURS

  • 10 to 20 hours per week initially
  • Base Rate: $55–$80/hour
